New Year's Day

It's that time again.. time for BASEBALL! Trevor had tryouts this weekend. This is the first sport he has played since we moved here. It was a gorgeous day...74 degrees...beautiful facilities...and baseball in the air. The tryouts were very organized and Trevor did great. I love that he is a confident player. He stepped right out there like the Spring season had just ended. At the end he even got on the mound to pitch like it was nothin'!

Darren was checking out the rest of this amazing complex, which consisted of many baseball fields, 2 playgrounds, and lots of fields for soccer and lacrosse etc.

The first week of January, Trevor attended a Baseball Camp at Roger Dean Stadium. This is where the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals have Spring Training. His camp was held on the practice field for the Cardinals...and I must admit that I was jealous of my 8 year old. The field was perfection. The dirt was lovely, no rocks, no bumps...and the outfield grass was as sooooo smooth. Heavenly! Trevor had a good time and learned a lot. Again, it was so well organized. There we no boys wrestling and being goofballs...they were there to play...that was made clear on Day 1. I liked that:)

Well, I must admit that I did not have time to write a Christmas letter this year:( So I thought I would send a quick update with some pictures of some of our Winter Activities. I must say that it is hard to even type Winter because it is between 70-80 degrees everyday. The boys are still wearing shorts to school and I think that Mark may never wear jeans again. It is truly gorgeous weather. Our windows are open and we can walk around the neighborhood and look at all the extravagant Christmas lights. We are blessed with a a wonderful neighborhood. Kids galore! The boys are so happy and enjoy playing outside with their crew everyday. Trevor is one of the oldest and had taken on the role with a great sense of responsibility and pride. The crew has accepted Darren and they play with him when he is willing and allow him his time when he needs it. Couldn't ask for more.

Yes, Darren ran from Santa once, then came back and did his best to smile. Santa was kind and patient...thank you Santa! We will leave more cookies for you this year.

I am happy to share that I was offered a job in the county as a full time aide to a 3rd grade girl that has a seizure disorder. I will be her one on one aide and I am thrilled to be back on my career track. Trevor currently attends a school that is K-2...and will be changing to a school next year that is 3-5. Well, I will be working at the 3-5 school. It is a large school, 950 kids. The principal and staff are wonderful and I feel that it is a good fit. I will be finishing up at Saks at the end of the month and then starting my new job on Jan 10. Very exciting.

Over the holiday break Trevor will be attending a baseball camp at Roger Dean Stadium. He is really looking forward to that. Honestly, with our crazy schedules, it has been hard figuring out any extracurricular activities. Hopefully with my new job, we can get Trevor back into the sports he loves...that is the goal.

Mark is still working hard at Ruby Tuesday. He has learned so much in a short period of time. It looks like he could possible get moved to a store closer to home...so keep your fingers crossed! Currently he drives an hour each way...hoping to cut that in half with the switch.

Darren continues to do well at school. He went through his typical rough spell..testing everyone that he could...but he has made a turn and is excelling once again. These cycles are just part of living with Darren. I think we have learned to expect and accept them a little more than we used to. The spells are frustrating, but he always comes out of them stronger...maybe we all come out stronger:)

It is so strange to have our Christmas tree up and our windows open! Today was 80 degrees and beautiful. The boys have the opportunity to play outside with friends everyday. Trevor peer out the back door looking for his friends...as soon as he spots one...off he goes! We are lucky to have a lot of kids around us and a street full of nice neighbors. We had a very great Thanksgiving...it was nice just being together. Thanks to everyone for making the boys birthday so wonderful. Your calls, gifts, emails, and cards were all greatly appreciated. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. And last but not least, we are so proud to share that Trevor got straight A's on his report card!!! Not sure Mark and I produced that...but we'll take it. We are so proud of how hard he working and how well he has adjusted. That says a lot about his character and drive. Darren.....is changing. That is the best way I can explain it. I watch him through a different set of eyes these days. I am learning to accept all that he is...all that is was...and all that he can be. There is no question that he is absolutely in the school, and environment, that he is best for him. Much love to all! Happy Holidays!

Darren continues to do a great job with his reading. Mark and I had the unique opportunity to literally be "a fly on the wall" as we watched his classroom via computer in the principals office. It was there that we watched him partake in his everyday activities and he had no clue we were doing so. I was nervous. Maybe I would see things that I didn't want to...Maybe I would see really good things that I didn't expect. I thought for sure I would cry. But instead, I just sat there. I took advantage of situation and just watched him. I laughed when he did something good...shook my head when he did something silly...and through this windowpane I saw the same old Darren that we all know and love. When the secretary asked, "How did it go?" My response was "He's still Darren." I am not saying that in a negative way...I am saying it because Darren is Darren. He is like no other child I know. He has such an endearing quality about him...but a there's a side of him that will test every patient bone in your body.

One major positive thing we saw was how much Darren was watching his peers. He was really checking them out to see what they were doing. At the time they were singing an interactive song. So he would watch...and then every now then..he'd copy them. I liked that. Darren seems happy at school, another positive. He is learning a ton...major positive. My major concern at this point is bridging that gap between his receptive and expressive language. So much to say...yet so little functional/conversational language. Sometimes the alien noises that he makes to fill that gap seriously drive me crazy. But, Trevor sings all the time...and talks constantly....so maybe Darren is exploring his voice still and just trying the fill the silence with SOMETHING. It is maddening...BUT he is reading....maybe I should just be thankful.

This week, Trevor has decided to be a singer/song writer. This video is a sneak preview. He are hoping to put music and obviously out together some awesome dance moves....I said "Ya know, you could be the next Justin Bieber" and he said "Umm no, more like Michael Jackson." Gotta love that!

As their 8th Birthday nears, we are so proud of the boys that they are...and believe in all that they can be.

The Reality Is....

That Darren is still autistic in Florida. Yes, he has had a great start to the year...but as expected he has been testing the ropes lately with the school staff. We have been so impressed with Darren's behavior and learning thus far, that it was almost like...we forgot for a moment. Well, he was happy to remind us:) Darren is so smart, but this time he made a grave error. He showed the staff at RLC just how smart he really was before acting out. So they have already seen his potential, they already know his tricks...too late to back track now. And honestly, in comparison to the "bad" times that Darren has had over the years, his behaviors are on the lower end of the scale. Yet, he is making everyone earn their Darren stripe. Those who have already earned theirs know exactly what I am talking about. I had an IEP meeting yesterday and continue to be extremely impressed with all that RLC has to offer. Their approach is positive and their will is strong. He has already mastered some of the goals that we just put in place in May. They modified some goals because he was already making significant progress...and they added goals that I never thought I would read on a IEP at this point and time. Here are some more videos of him reading and working on his homework. He is really trying SO hard..he's just making the teachers work just as hard these days.

Trevor continues to well in school and really enjoys 2nd grade. His reading assessment showed improvement from where he left off at the end of last year....and bottom line is...he is happy. The class size is great and his teacher is very caring and kind. Trevor is a mature kid for his age. I love that he loves school and adjusts well to new situations. I think a lot of that comes from having to deal with Darren over the years. Having them a different schools has really turned out to be the better path for them both. I had this vision of them being together...but my vision wasn't a realistic one. Trevor does a great job with Darren, no doubt about it...but he also needs a life of his own..to just be Trevor. I am not trying to paint the perfect picture of him..because Lord knows...this kid is a handful as well. He doesn't miss a thing, he is forever singing and talking, he will battle your will, but ultimately win your heart. Much love to everyone!

Here are some of the sights of Jupiter! We love taking bike rides...(boys bike and I run). We have a nice little route that we enjoy. Three quarters of the way into the trip we stop at the park, cool down with some water, and run around the playground. I love our bike ride/run. It is something that we can do together. Before, I would run to clear my mind and have some peace and quiet:) Now that the boys are older, this is a fun way to be together. It was on a recent ride that I noticed just how competitive Darren is at times. He likes to race Trevor...and he will speed up a bit and turn his head to see if Trevor is following close behind. Once he sees Trevor kick it up a notch...Darren kicks it into high gear...smiling all the while:) Wonder why he's so competitive?????? Where does he get that from????? Anyways, this park is so nice. There are plenty of outdoor facilities here. We are trying to find our favorite hot spots and take advantage of the fun.
The boys are doing great. School for Darren has just been such a smooth transition, which is a sign to us that he is in the right place. Today is Friday, which means that Darren is golfing at school! Every Friday they take a bus to a local golf facility and have a 30 min lesson with a First Tee Program. The teachers say that likes hitting the ball off the tee, although last week he had to listen to one of the instructors go over the basics (heaven forbid)...they said he had no tolerance for that...he just wanted to hit the ball!!!!! Trevor seems to have made friends very quickly and loves school. Our days start a little earlier (school starts at 8 for Trev/8:30 for Darren) but they are home earlier in the afternoon...which is nice. It's still hard to believe that we live in Florida, but I can't imagine being anywhere else.

So far, our first week of school has been GREAT! I am so happy to report that Darren is reading!!! Over the past two days he was introduced to 5 sight words and has been working on a short story using those words. The story "My Home". It brought tears to my eyes as I watched him read. Mark and I were SO excited!!! What a positive step in the right direction. He has had two wonderful days at school. (Tuesday, he tried some old tricks, but it seems as though the plan in place is working:) Sorry for all the updates, but this was a big one.

Secondly, Mark has been offered a Manager position at Ruby Tuesday. He is VERY excited about this new opportunity and will start next week. Mark has spent some great time with the boys as I continue to enjoy my new job at Saks. Our schedules will be crazy, but it can't be any worse than living in two states! Things seems to be falling into place and we are thankful for all the love and support that we have received.

Day 1 was a major success! Trevor was dropped off first and led to his new classroom by a helpful student. He was picked up by Mark and was happy to report that he had a great day, met lots of new friends, and likes his teacher a lot. He also asked to go to school a little earlier tomorrow! Ha!

Darren was next. He had a little anxiety in the car as we waited for the gates to open but was able to pull himself together and walk with his new teacher into his school. I admit, I cried in worry on and off for the next hour. Hopeful that all would go well, but nervous that he would test the limits of his new teachers. So as I picked him up, I was unsure as to what to expect. I saw his teacher soon upon arriving and the expression on her face surprised me. She said that he tested them from about 8 to 10:30. He did so by attempting to put his feet on the desk. They were persistent with him..which Darren doesn't like:) so he tried to swat at them a bit and tried to bite once and then she said, "that was it!" The rest of day he did great. I looked at her and said "seriously?" and she reiterated that he really had a good day. He has been very happy this afternoon and when asked if he liked school..he answers "yes!"

I don't know what to attribute it to honestly. All I know is that we'll take it. One day at a time...and day 1 was a success!

I am happy to say that we are loving Florida. Believe it or not, the boys start school in 3 weeks! They will both be wearing uniforms this year, which I think will be very nice. We have been to both schools and feel really good about where they will be. The times that we have visited Darren's school, the staff has been so nice and accommodating to our random visits. Darren was able to see his classroom and meet his new teacher, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, and the principal. He will receive double the speech and language time that he formerly received. We are so hopeful that his language will continue to increase, we love hearing his voice:) It's hard to imagine not having our former team around us...we were so blessed at Willow Springs...but we really feel that he could reach new heights here.

Trevor is growing up fast. He is a mature little boy who is just full of personality. He is meeting new friends at the pool, and of course, continues to be an amazing brother. He's been playing some tennis with Daddy along with throwing and hitting the baseball around a bit. I haven't looked into Sports Leagues yet, but I am sure that once schools starts he'll be playing...something.

It's almost like we have all forgotten that we lived the two state life for as long as we did. I know that must sound strange, but its true. There is no price tag that you can put on being together.

I was lucky enough to land a job at Saks 5th Avenue! I started last week and I really enjoy it. We keep reminding ourselves that we have only been here a little over a month, but we truly feel that things are falling into place.

It has been an adventure, but we are here. We are getting settled and so happy to be in beautiful Florida. The boys are loving life! Yesterday we drove to check out the boys' schools and then headed to the beach . It is gorgeous. Yes, it is hot, but we love it! More updates and pictures to come!

How do describe a man that lived over 105 years? Remarkable seems to fit just fine. This picture represents him well. I remember many a Thanksgiving at the farm. Now, I had raked leaves before, but I had NEVER experience this kind of labor. I recall the first time I took part in this process. Junie would have his clip board ready with his list as he waited for the worker bees to gather. All knew their jobs and responsibilities. The tarps were pulled and spread out so that the leaves could be raked and then taken to the burn pit. There were so many leaves! All were delirious at days end but greeted with a wonderful meal of true Thanksgiving.

Some of my favorite memories:
At the age of 90 this remarkable man had brain surgery. We were all amazed when soon after surgery... he waved to us...giving us the A OK thumbs up. Astonishing.

Not being able to drive after the surgery was heart breaking for him. He struggle with it tremendously and hated the thought of relying on others to take him where he needed to go. He still had the T-Bird and one day family members were in the garage trying to start it up just to let it run a bit. No one could get it going. Junie came out, sat in that car, and started it on the first go round. His smile was priceless...he still had it.

At mass when Silent Night was sung, a deep cry emerged from his soul. It was so real and raw and something that I will never forget.

I had a dream when the boys were 4..before Darren could talk. A very vivid dream in which Darren was standing in front of the family and he was speaking clearly. I was on my knees sobbing and Darren was comforting me and telling me not to cry. Junie looked at me and said "See, I told you he would talk...it's going to be ok". I believed him...and so it is.

Lastly, at times watching Trevor play sports...I wonder "where did he learn that?" I will forever remind myself, and him, that he's got a lot of Junie in him.

Mark has many other wonderful memories of his grandfather...and at the service many shared touching stories...they all share one common thread: He was truly a remarkable man. God bless Junie.

A Good Week

What a week! After Spring Break we jumped back into our routine. Trevor had lots of baseball this week. It took the team a tough loss to get refocused and back on track. The Rattlers had a strong win yesterday defeating their opponent 10-1! Our bats finally came alive and the pitching was solid. Trevor started off the week with a superb pitching performance and received a game ball for his efforts. Later in the week he was placed in a high pressure situation with the game tied 3-3. Trevor took the mound and tried his best. A run did score and the Rattlers were not able to answer with a run of their own. This was a great experience for Trevor, I feel that the next time he is in that situation, he will conquer it.
Trevor has really been hitting the ball well this week! Wow, what a difference! He is confident and his timing is on. Trevor is batting second in the order and producing with great consistency.
Darren played in his first Challenger Baseball Game on Saturday. This is a league for children with special needs. They provide wonderful volunteers from some of the older teams to buddy up with the kids. Darren, with his baseball pants and under armour shirt, stood in shock when on the field. It was overwhelming, but cool. Darren's buddy was very patient and kind and encouraged him with high fives. As with every first time experience, Darren tried to fight the process. He told his buddy to shhhh, slapped at him, and spit at him....but when he realized he had done wrong and that he wasn't getting out of it...the tears surfaced and he apologized. This is always a good sign. It seems to be a sign of surrender:) Darren really did a great job considering all the newness of the situation. He got to hit twice, making contact both times and ran the bases well. We look forward to the next game!
Lastly, Darren had some testing done at school and we were very pleased with the results. Now, it didn't show that he was Einstein, but it didn't say that he wasn't either:) It proved to me once again that Darren has great potential. It showed me how much Autism is blocking his true abilities. It showed me how much he has progressed and that the sky is the limit with this kid.

Spring Break

We have had a great time in Calabash. Darren and I started off our days with a 3 mile walk. This seemed to really help him get his body regulated and ready for the day.

Grandpap, Trevor, Darren, and I had a great round of miniature golf. Trevor won, as always! Darren did great and enjoyed himself and completed all 18 holes!

This foursome also took to the links and played 9 holes on two separate occasions. This was a first...and great fun was had by all. Trevor shot a 70 on his first go round. We were amazed that he consistently was driving the ball about 100 yards or so. On his first par 3 he drove it over the water onto the green. Grandpap and I were really impressed. Darren enjoyed riding in the cart with mommy and helping to drive every now and then. The second time out Trevor shot a 67. We allowed him to move his ball if it was in the bunker (which happened twice) but other than that we counted all of his shots...he had a great time but his competitive soul was a little disappointed that he didn't beat Grandpap or Mommy. I have a feeling that he will be doing both in no time!

The Rattlers are officially 1-0! They put out a great effort even though battling some tough weather conditions. Trevor had his pitching debut and was fantastic. He pitched 2 innings and struck out 3 batters. He showed great poise and consistency. Other Trevor highlights: Well he actually did a "slide by" at home and was successful...SAFE! I have no idea where he learned that. He went 1-4...still working on his timing. Hitting takes a lot of practice...so we are practicing. Once he feels it....he'll know.

Shining Stars

This Saturday is a BIG DAY. It is World Autism Day AND Opening Day for Trevor's baseball team. Go Rattlers! We are very proud of our shining stars. Trevor was drafted! He is playing AA baseball this season and is soaring. At his first scrimmage he started a shortstop (yes, I was super proud) and batted first in the line-up. He had never played short before and had never hit off live pitching in a game situation. Trevor did great. His timing needs some adjusting, but he made good contact and even got on base once. Sources say he may even pitch on Opening Day...another first! He has been practicing hard and says he's ready to go...Put him in Coach...he's ready to play...today:) I am baffled by this little athlete...he is so fun to watch. A couple of funny stories: First day of practice, Trevor is working with the pitching coach and he is teaching him a how to snap his wrist down more. Trevor yells out "Hey Coach, my mom already taught me that drill" Coach responds "Wow, really? When?" Trevor responded "Umm, like 5 years ago". Ha! Yes, I did teach him that, but it certainly wasn't 5 years ago at the age of 2! But it made me laugh. Secondly, the team was taking infield...Trevor was playing third base at the time and the ball was hit to short. The shortstop did not go for it very aggressively so Coach questioned the shortstop about the play. Coach proceded to go into this whole rant about the position of SS. "It's and ego position, SS wants every ball, every play" etc. I look out of the corner of my eye and Trevor is raising his hand...he is ready to tell coach with innocent happiness that Mommy played SS...ha! Knowing that was not the best time to share that information...I quickly shook him off:) World Autism Day I love that these two events are happening on the same day. Wonder Twin Powers-Activate. Verbal and nonverbal communication. Symptoms may include:

Delay in, or lack of, learning to talk. As many as 40% of people with autism never speak. Problems taking steps to start a conversation. Also, people with autism have difficulties continuing a conversation after it has begun.
Stereotyped and repetitive use of language. People with autism often repeat over and over a phrase they have heard previously (echolalia).

In my opinion, Darren isn't a typical child with Autism. Being a twin has put an interesting twist on his personality. He has always had Trevor in his face, whether he liked it or not. Darren's interests have always been unique. It started with sticks, spatulas, a tape measure, his own hand, a hoop, and various other objects that he HAD to have with him at all times. He still carries "transition toys" (toy that he likes to have in his hands when leaving the house and going to school etc) but they are not as specific as they used to be. AND most importantly, he is willing to leave the item in the car or share the item...in the past, asking him to do so would prompt a major tantrum.

His speech issues were obviously a concern. When Trevor's language started to take off, Darren went no where. He made sounds, and showed emotion...but nothing substantial was developing and his frustration level began to rise dramatically. So for the longest time, he would drag me around and take me to what he wanted. For example if he was thirsty, he would take me to the refrigerator. I would then take my best guess as to what he wanted. If I chose the wrong thing...let's say milk instead of juice..a meltdown would occur. This was a very frustrating time for all of us. We are so thankful that he is verbal! Although we are now in the "no" stage. Ha!

Darren's sleeping issues were exhausting. I would say that there was a span between 12-24 months that Darren would wake up around 2am and remain awake until 4am. Not every night...but it happened often enough. It was like he just couldn't regulate his body.

Early on, Darren was sensitive to loud noises. Yet, when we would call his name, he wouldn't turn around and acknowledge us. It seemed odd. We knew his hearing was fine though because if he was in another room and heard Baby Einstein come on, he would come running in to watch.

The extreme tantrums when transitioning from one activity to another started to happen with great consistency. Leaving the park for instance, was an every day nightmare. Trevor certainly had his tantrums, but Darren's had a different intensity.

Looking back, there were certainly more red flags than these. These are just the ones that stand out the most. It's hard to think back to those times, but helps me appreciate how far we all have come.

I have decided to take these next couple of weeks to do my part in educating others about Autism. Then, by April 2nd, you will be well informed and able to share this awareness with others when they ask "Why are you wearing blue today?".

I found these interesting facts on the Autism Awareness Website:

Approximately 67 million people worldwide are affected by autism
Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the world
More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with diabetes, cancer, and AIDS combined
Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism
There is no medical detection or cure for autism, but early diagnosis and intervention improve outcomes

So those are some of the basics. We all got very sick over the Christmas and into the New Year. Mark also had surgery on his knee. As Trevor would say" we were all busted up". Thankfully we are doing well now and just happy to be back to the normal routine.

Trevor played great Defense today! He also seemed to be a natural point guard. The coach was impressed with his ability to see the court and pass to his teammates. I was happy to see him hustling after the ball, getting rebounds, and staying positive. Great first game.

Tis' the Season-BASKETBALL

In this video Trevor was around 18months old, possibly a little younger than that. We were all fascinated that this kid didn't miss many shots. At times he could shoot with one hand, or eyes closed and STILL make it. I actually showed him this video not too long ago because he tried to tell that he wasn't that good at basketball. You see, this is what happens with Trevor and I at the beginning of every sports season. We head outside to catch. or shoot, or throw the football. HE expects to be perfect from the get go. I know how to teach him how to be better than he can even imagine. SO, our stubborn forces collide. It usually ends in tears, one or both of us actually. When Trevor feels pressed upon, he comes back at you like a tiger. I admire that about him, he wears his heart on his sleeve. Even my calm and supportive attempts to perfect his shot are ORIGINALLY taken as criticism...and his feelings get hurt. As he shuts down...all the while grumbling, then....so do I. If I can't teach my own kid the lessons that I have learned...what the hell is wrong with me??? We both end up retreating to our corners...arms crossed and feet stomping. MATURE on my part:) But the fog always lifts. The next day...we are back at it and to my amazement...everytime...he has listened to every word. Then I witness the improvements with my own eyes....my heart whispers "SEE, Teamwork".

Hmmm...what would I do without Trevor? I honestly don't know. He is my dear and stubbornly sweet Italian boy. At times, I feel this 7 year old is wise beyond his years. At times, I wish I had his heart. At times, I want and need to put him in his place. But for sure, he has changed our family. When he is preforming in front of anyone that will listen, Mark and I look at each and shake our heads. When he makes plays on the field that seem uncharacteristic for a kid his age, we cheer from the cheap seats. I believe in this miracle. I have learned with Trevor that when dealing with issues: Head to Head can be a battle...more productive to go Heart to Heart.

Autism

I didn't know at the time that this little angel would change my world. I had never seen Autism at this age. There was so much I didn't know. At times, I still wish I didn't know. Dealing with Autism sucks, it really does. It's awful because you have this child, this beautiful loving child, and at times you don't know what they are thinking, feeling, or saying. Your heart aches to fill the gaps...but mostly, you learn to that you would do anything to make him happy. Yes, we are blessed to have a socially autistic child. He is so loving, thank god, because it is that love that saves his butt daily. Trevor and I had a "discussion" recently and he felt that I was being too tough on him in regards to baseball. I explained that I was teaching him, that I loved baseball and saw a future for him because he seemed to share the same love of baseball and possesses some solid skills. I told him that I correct him because I love him. He didn't quite get that concept until I reminded him how much I correct Darren on a daily basis. Again. I do so because I love him and expect a lot from him. And I do. But I never expect Darren to be "normal" I just expect Darren to be his best. I force him to use his words, not make sounds. I want him to follow rules and I follow through if he doesn't'. I want him to try to new things, be a part of society, so that he can teach others, not so that he conforms...so that others may learn. It isn't easy to take Darren places, it never has been, and maybe never will be. But that isn't going to stop me from trying. Yes, I get frustrated. I did so today in fact.

The boys had a day off and we headed to the Airplane Museum. We were having a wonderful time, until we ventured towards the observation deck. As we approached, I saw that we had to wait for the elevator to return allowing us to go up. Darren, instantly charged toward the button on the elevator...I grabbed him before he got there, but the lady working there turned toward Darren and said " well you young man may not be allowed up there". Now, I have had this feeling once before where Darren was younger. The old man at the Starbucks told him Santa was watching blah blah blah...and I left there in tears. Well, I turned to this lady and said that he was Autistic and he didn't understand that he had to wait. She interrupted me and said "then you should have had his hand". Excuse me???? "You try a day in MY shoes old lady" is what I really wanted to say. I am not using Autism as an excuse...I was sharing my soul, she obviously wasn't interested. Not all people that we encounter will be. That's life.

It isn't easy. Doesn't mean I don't love him immensely...it just isn't' easy. I feel like I have to have eyes on him 24/7. He is sneaky, manipulative, and non-stop. For example, he loves watching the toilet flush, he will pee small amounts just so he can watch the swirl. He won't leave the bathroom until the tank has filled. He spins anything and everything. I have found him with jewerly, lightbulbs, parts of a flashlight amongst many others. Mark says if the they had spinning in the Olympics, Darren would have a gold medal. True. There seems to be something calming in spinning. Darren also pays great attention to minor details. He is extremely focused in this one activity. I don't have all the answers, I probably never will.

The noises instead of words is what drives me crazy, and yet, there was a time that I thought he would never talk. Funny how expectations change. I guess I am so happy that he IS verbal, that at times I expect the moon. Maybe, I should delight in the sunrise.

And then there is this sweet boy. A boy that I KNOW loves me. Who looks to me for understanding, discipline, and love. My life may end up being dedicated to all of those things. HE didn't ask for Autism. None of us did. Life is just complicated sometimes. Autism is very complicated. It forces you, IT FORCES ME, to trust my gut, to speak my mind, to speak the words that I think Darren is thinking. It forces me to connect deeply with this child, to step outside of my comfort zone and be a different person. And this is just the how Darren has influenced me. Trevor is another can of worms:) I guarentee you all that all of this was NOT in any parent manual.

Darren IS love, but Darren isn't easy.

We Love You Great-Grandma

Last weekend Mark's grandmother passed away. Not only was this a tremendous loss for our family, it was a hard discussion to have with the boys. When the boys and I were driving home just as I had picked them up after having had the opportunity to have visited with Christine (along with Mark and other family and friends) in the hospital...I felt it only fair to warn Trevor. He is very sensitive and I knew this would hurt his little heart. Trevor kept asking, "Is she sick? Does she have a cold? Why is Daddy still at the hospital? Great-Grandma is the one with curly blond hair, right? " I explained that Great Grandma was very sick and that she might go to Heaven soon. He instantly broke out in tears, thus, so did Darren, and did I. We prayed that God would take care of her and that he would tell her how much we all truly loved her and would miss her. Yesterday we made this stepping stone so that we could always remember her. The stars glow at night, forever shining down on us all. We all feel so blessed to have had shared life with her. Her strength, presence, and unconditional love and support can never be measured, only truly appreciated. God bless you Christine, as you have blessed us all.

Fall

Happy Fall! The boys and I headed to a Fall festival last weekend. This particular spot is known for its huge corn maze. I think it spans 2.5 miles. It also offered a good old hay ride and some fun slides etc, but relatively small scale in comparison to a Cox Farm. This made it easier to keep track of both boys and allow them a bit of freedom in choosing where they wanted to play. I must say that I was a bit nervous about tackling the corn maze. Typical me, I was expecting the worst, which meant visions of not being able to keep track of Darren and being surrounded by corn. Trevor, on the other hand, was extremely confident that it would be fine. So, I went with it, and it actually turned out to be pretty cool. Trevor took the lead and led the troops. He was very thorough and seemed to be calculating every turn. I was just making sure that we never got to far away from the people ahead of us:) But we successfully brought our flag home and Darren didn't get lost in the corn. Success!

Darren continues to be quite a character. Let's just say, you can't leave him alone for too long. He enjoys pouring your soda or coffee down the drain at the exact moment you are not looking. Darren equally enjoys hiding items in places that you would not quite expect...I went for a towel and I found my flip flops. It certainly keeps things interesting around here:) On a positive, now that Trevor has homework everyday, I have been making Darren do some homework as well. I have been very pleased with attention to the task, the improvement in his fine motor skills (writing, coloring, cutting), and his noticeable pride in himself when the task is complete. As always, if you are not quick to praise him, he will happily do it himself. A true character.

My little stud. Look at that stance! What a great season it has been. The Rattlers have taken the league by storm. They unfortunately suffered their first lost this weekend, but coach was great at pointing out to the boys the difficult nature of going undefeated in any sport. I thought that was a great lesson. The team has made great improvements. Trevor is such a gamer. He may not make every single play, but man, he tries so hard. He has really taken to the role of first base. Mind you, he's the youngest kid on the team, and yet...he gets the job done. During one game, the second baseman was only a couple steps away from Trevor and at the last minute tossed it into Trevor's face. Without thinking, I ran (literally) across the field. A parent made fun of me after:) but that's my boy, what was I supposed to do???! Trevor handled it great...well, he was doing well... then he was up to bat and grounded out. Suddenly the injury intensified:) He never sat out though (that's my boy). A couple games back, he hit an official double! He really likes baseball. Sadly, there is just one game left. Next up, Basketball season!

Back to School and Baseball

It's official. The boys are back to school! Woo-Hoo! We are happy to report that both boys are doing well. Trevor is starting at a new school this year, and he is adjusting beautifully. He seems very content and is making new friends. The first couple of days when I asked him who he was playing with at school his list contained a lot of girls. So I asked him about it...he laughed and said "that"s just my style". OH, well excuse me. It actually is his style. Trevor is very smart, he knows that the girls will initially be very nice and "take care of him" which gives him time to assess the boys and find his "in". So I knew the day we were walking home and he told me that he got a warning in class that he had started working his way "in". He admitted to being a silly goofball in class. Darren is at the same school he finished up at last year and we are thrilled. This school has embraced him and we are very fortunate. This doesn't mean that Darren is a perfect angel everyday...it means that the staff work very hard to provide a safe, fun, and challenging environment for him. They applaud his successes and collaboratively work through his struggles. For these reasons, we feel blessed.

This season Trevor has moved up a step and is playing on a machine pitch team. I think he is the youngest kid, but he is holding his own. The coach is a total baseball loving guy and Trevor is soaking it all up. Heck, we all are. It is a breath of fresh air to see good baseball. They say the pledge of allegiance before the game and then recite another little league pledge of sorts... yes, i tear up every time. It's these moments that instill pride in the hearts of our children. I can't say it enough...sports allow the opportunity for so many life lessons. These years are the building blocks that create our future men and women. It's not just baseball to me at least. Mark is doing a great job coaching third base...and Darren and I usually watching from the cheap seats way out there by the playground:) And yes, I still yell from there. Would you expect anything different????

We are in a baseball state of mind around here these days. The past two mornings, Darren has been outside before 8am hitting balls off the tee. His choice..probably not the neighbors preference but oh well:) Last night, Trevor wanted to hit some balls, so Mark was pitching to him. Then Darren came outside and this playtime began. It was exciting to watch and certainly very entertaining.

We were fortunate enough to get some great seats and truly enjoyed watching the Washington Nationals take on the Hot-lanta Braves (as Mark likes to call them:)

We got our program, checked out the field, and grabbed a pretzel and hat, in no time flat!

Trevor was lucky enough to be given a ball by the first base coach!!! Very exciting!!

The Nationals played well, even after an hour rain delay, they pulled off a win! Go Nats!

LOVE the POOL

The boys LOVE the pool. They always have. But this year, if they could go off the diving board for hours upon hours, they would! They do the same thing over and over....jump, swim to ladder, and go back in line. Trevor attempted to dive, twice now. The first time was a success. The second time proceeded in a belly flop that left him in tears. Haven't we all done that? So as he slowly climbed the ladder, tears boiling, I challenged him to ask anyone here at the pool if they too had ever belly flopped. At the moment, that meant nothing to him. But as he thought about it, he realized that it's the risk you take...and has accepted that...he also has not attempted a dive since then:) In time....in time.

Darren and the water are one in the same. At the pool, and even at the beach, I feel that Darren is in his element. These are places that Darren looks normal. Sound strange? Well, it shouldn't. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, the water and extreme coordination are passions and strengths of Darren's. He WANTED to swim...he now swims. He watched Trevor for a YEAR jump off the diving board....this year he jumped without reservation and hasn't stopped yet. He goes underwater, kicks a couple times and comes up laughing...he is SO proud of himself for trying something new. Does this sound like autism to you??? Not to me....this is normal:)

Summertime

We are all enjoying our summer thus far. Its usually during this that I noticed how much they have grown. Not just physically, but developmentally as well. I am convinced that Darren is going to be 6'5, he just seems so tall to me. Trevor is going to be borrowing shoes from Shaq at this rate and he has kept the tooth fairy on his toes...I can't even remember what Trevor looks like with teeth at this point:)

It is wonderful seeing their personalities blossom. Trevor continues to be my little Italian boy. He really enjoyed Kindergarten this year. His reading skills are really improving, still gets a little frustrated when trying to sound out words. We are trying to "practice" more often. Trevor REALLY loves Math. In the car he always wants me to give him math problems to figure out. He is also very good at counting coins.

Tball was a blast this year. Trevor had a great time and really enjoyed all-stars. It was a nice way to take the game to the next level. He continues to love sports and is extremely competitive. I love that about him. This season was a real learning experience. I was reminded how great sports are for kids. So many wonderful lessons to be learned. At an age when they are little sponges, it is a perfect time to learn about the concepts of TEAM, WINNING, LOSING, HAVING GOALS, and WORKING HARD TO ACHIEVE THEM. So important. With Trevor, I constantly feel that I reflecting on my childhood...trying to provide him with all the good experiences of being a kid, but more importantly I have tried to evaluate my mistakes...and pass on the knowledge to him. I, too, was very competitive and very very hard on myself. I really try to talk things out with him. Share stories, good and bad. I think it helps us both:)

Darren continues to amaze me. If Trevor is the challenge of my past, Darren is the challenge of the future. He keeps me on my toes, that"s for sure. I feel that I have a built in sonar just for Darren that is constantly evaluating his location, mood, and excitement level. His school year was an absolute roller coaster ride, but I learned so much and truly feel that he is in the right school surrounded by dedicated staff that love and tolerate him:) Darren's personality is certainly shining through on all levels. He can be funny, engaging, silly, feisty, stubborn, and sweet. Patience is always needed, "the look from mommy" is always helpful as well.

Together, they are the Wonder Twins. I watch them play and fight and unconditionally love each other everyday. Trevor is a stronger person because of it, and Darren, a blessed child to have such a loving brother. They have great potential because of their special bond.

Yes, I am happy, even giddy, I admit it. Full Day Kindergarten looks great on me:) I love those boys, BUT it was time!!! Time for all to move forward, learn from others...separation of church and state sounds better by the day. No, I didn't cry....I did contain myself...I didn't pump my fist in the air yelling YES, finally either:) Ironically I am reading the book "Happiness NOW"...can I get A-men!

(Mark, on the other hand, would like me to consider homeschooling the boys...hahahaha)

Trevor is taking Kindergarten in stride. But he's also been waiting for it since the last day of pre-school in May. He seems to really love it. The class has about 20 kids. He reported someone ("not me Mommia, I promise") kissing in line on the first day. He said he told the teacher, lol. Oh my...here we go again!

Darren's transition has not been as smooth. He made a good first impression alright, with his teeth! That's Darren for you...leaves his mark wherever he goes. It's a new school, new teacher, new students, many new transitions and demands. It will take time for him to get settled, as it always does.

My Baseball Boys

Now, this is a long video.....but probably one of my favorites thus far. I think when you watch it you'll see why:)

Trevor is certainly very talented for his age. He naturally loves sports and is innately competitive. The hard part is teaching him things like leadership, the importance of being humble, and ironically....the importance of being a good student on and off the field. Go ahead and laugh everyone...yes.....this is a "full circle' moment. SO about a week ago we were getting ready to go to bed and I was super tired "shock" and I think Darren was in bed watching a movie and Trevor was not ready to hit the hay quite yet. So I suggested that he get some books and we could relax and read some books together. Honestly I was just hoping that I could close my eyes while he looked at the pictures:) but he seemed interested in reading so I sat up and regrouped and began pointing at the words...simple words...his demeanor instantly changed. He got VERY silly and shy-like. I am thinking what is going on with this kid.....instant freak out flashes occurred:

"Oh god...does he have a learning disability...have I been paying too much attention to Darren that I missed it????????"

"Oh I am a terrible mom who hasn't read to her child and now he is severely behind!!!!!!!"

"Does he need a tutor at the age of five? Do they have such things?" Good lord how much is that going to cost????????"

and then it hits.....

"OH NO...he takes after ME!!!!!!!"

I broke out in a light sweat and tried not to expose my total freak out mode...and I collected myself. Deep breath, deep breath.....I then think I handled myself very well. I wiped the sweat from my brow and went into a deep discussion on the importance of being smart. Acting stupid isn't' funny...it's just stupid. We started breaking down the words and he struggled. He was trying so hard to please me......or be cute and funny....that he wasn't thinking. I can promise all that I drilled this concept into his little curly head:) and we talked about it a lot now and have made reading our new goal for the summer.

No rest for the weary around here, that's for sure. Darren is on the up swing right now. Lots of talking....even calls me Pam on occasion...HA! He started summer school and has surprisingly adjusted extremely well. There were a lot of new faces this summer and I was worried that he was going to be miserable....I even considered not sending him, but decided that wasn't the best decision for me. I love him dearly.....but to be with him 24/7 all summer was probably not the best for all. SO, hesitantly, I sent him and it has all worked out wonderfully. Who knew...

I will share one last story about Darren which I know I will NEVER EVER forget...and I am extremely happy that I had my mom as a witness. I had just gotten home from working with some clients and was sharing my experiences with my mom. My work right now keeps me very centered and I enjoy the challenge. It helps motivate me to try new things with Darren and also accept and recognize how far he has come. So as I was telling my mom this, Darren comes around me and I look at him and say" you amaze me" AND I AM NOT KIDDING WHEN I TELL YOU THAT HE RESPONDED WITH THESE EXACT WORDS

Darren: "Believe"

Me: "Believe?"

Darren: "I'm not broken"

Needless to say, my mom and I cried our eyes out. It brings tears to my eyes now. It was a true divine message that needed to be heard on that particular day.

So I will end this by saying......I do believe:)

Needless to say, we have been busy. Both boys are riding two wheel bikes. I find this shocking actually because I really did nothing to teach either of them. I literally took of the training wheels and Trevor rode down the street...WHAT??? only Trevor. But then a week later Darren up Trevor's bike and wanted to try. So...for a half hour I follow behind him carefully helping him maintain his balance. Half of Darren's problem was that he was being so careful...and riding very slow. Once he picked up the pace enough to keep his balance he was off and riding!!!! The love riding their bikes...trust me....it's the first thing Darren requests as soon as we get out the car.

Yes, I can officially say that Darren is talking. I used to hesitate in saying so because it was just some words and not always understood by all. But I can honestly say that he has found his voice. He is pointing and labels things like clock, tree, circle, fan, and certainly any food items. He is even doing 3 word phrases....his favorite being...I want gum! 123 go! one more time! 2 more minutes:) When I say I love you.....he says "so much". He is seriously trying to repeat just about everything...he even attempts to sing parts of the song Poker Face...hahaha To say that we are thrilled with this new stage is an understatement. We feel blessed. It is so exciting watching him discover and connect. Mind you....he is still Darren...feisty as hell...but he is truly coming into his own.

Trevor and his team, The Blue Rockets, are enjoying their season. They currently have 2 games a week and will continue until the first week of June. Trevor is doing great. I on the other hand am so bothered by the new version on T-ball. Don't even get me started:) I am just a big believer that sports are an easy way to teach young kids simple life lessons. When you get a big hit, you should get to run more than one base. When one team scores more than the other team....they win. I know...it's just t-ball...they should be just having fun. Do you that as a kid I used to hate when my coaches would say that??? You can teach the kids to work hard, practice, play well and win. Trust me, that's fun. AND there is nothing wrong with losing! Again, a teachable moment....ANYWAYS....he enjoys it and is doing very well.

Let's see...what else....ummmm Oh the business! Things are going very well. Sports camps are a big hit! We finished our first 8-week session and have started up two new sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. Trevor and Darren attend both and we are really enjoying them. We have a great team of people working the camps and all of the kids are reaping the benefits of that. Things have progressed quicker than expected, but it's all good, not complaining:)

April 2nd.....World Autism Awareness Day

Did everyone know that there was such a thing as "World Autism Awareness Day"! Well, now ya know:) Perfect timing actually because I have been debating recently with this question: What is this autism thing all about?

I obviously watch Darren and feel like I know that kid inside and out. With the company I have been able to meet new children and see autism in a different light. It may sound strange, but I find autism fascinating. I am perplexed by it. I am intrigued with it. I am not sure how to deal with it.......but it's ok to me. There are some things in this world that you just can't understand...Autism is one of them. There are things in this world that you can't prove....Autism is one of those things. THAT is not what bothers me about Autism. It is the differences in each child that make me wonder what this is all about. How come there are kids that have words....like hundreds of words...and then lose them???????????? WHAT? How come there are kids that never have words??????????? How come there are kids that are really sick and have major digestive issues?????? How is it there are kids that don't have those issues?? Why is it that some have "conversational" speech ? Why can't the others? SERIOUSLY the spectrum is HUGE! Way too big as far as I am am concerned. I feel that in the long run....Autism will be broken down into MANY different categories:

Those who had speech and lost speech

Those with a large gap between receptive and expressive language

Those with no expressive language

Those with HIGH expressive language and no social skills

Those with some social skills and little expressive language

Those with extreme behaviors, yet are highly intelligent

HONESTLY...the list could go on and on and on. As every typically developing child differs....so does the autistic child. So I will from this point on...focus on what I know to be true.....from a personal perspective.

These children are a blessing. These children are so smart and intuitive.......even beyond our comprehension. They are sent here as a challenge and a gift. A challenge to the norm.... a gift for those with ability to be willing to accept. They are a reminder that life can be rewarding if you continue to fight. They are a blessing to those that take on the challenge...if you can love and provide structure for these kids......you will reap the benefits above and beyond your expectations. I believe that God gives you ONLY what you can handle......parents of children with special needs are given an assignment from the get go....not to say the everyone else at some point isn't given their "assignment" because I believe that everyone will experience a major life challenge. Special needs parents just get the advantage of knowing early on.

I, on this day of awareness, don't want anyone to feel sorry for Darren or our family. KNOW that he is a blessing in our lives. An unexplainable gift. I can not imagine my life without him. I can't imagine the person that I would be...or the person that Trevor would be without this remarkable child. In 5 years....he and I have learned SO much. I have been challenged more than ever....and I can't imagine it any other way. So I say, be aware, accept the differences in all children, and be supportive of those you love.

THANK YOU to all that have supported us. Thank for understanding that it hasn't been easy. Thank you for accepting us as is. Know that we appreciate you all!

These are the Days of our Lives

This is an email that I wrote recently to Darren and Trevor's teachers and therapist.....after re-reading it again, I thought that it was a good insight into our life these days. We are all seem to be climbing to new heights:)
Hi everyone,

You all know me so well by now that I just have to be honest with you all. I am beginning to have a greater understanding of both of my children and their unique needs. I thankfully feel confident that if we can all communicate then we can all provide consistency for both.
I will start with Trevor. Honestly, I can't recall what actually started the conversation. I was sitting talking with Grandma about the behavior's that Grandma is seeing with Darren when I am gone on my weekend meetings. He is not listening and is not being compliant at all with grandma and daddy. This, along with the sports camps that he is participating in WITH Darren has started to bring new awareness.....Trevor and I are seeing a different side of Darren. A more realistic side.....maybe a more holistic side....and we are both trying to process it. Trevor, for the first time, really wanted to discuss it. I wish I could do it justice....but he spoke with insight and perspective and compassion and confusion and with genuine love and concern for his brother and for the family. It was amazing and emotional and deep. It was also funny at times to hear him compare Darren with Godzilla and himself with Mothra. He also observed that Darren did not speak English...maybe he spoke another language.........and the conversation went on and on. I was able to talk about school next year...about how Darren's brain was different than his....that he learns different....and that he needs special teachers that understand him. We went around and took turns saying all the good things that Darren does, then we did the bad things. Trevor's major concern was that Darren did not have self control....he was truly perplexed by that. "Why did God make him like that?" It went on for at least 30/40 min.......and I was in tears listening to this wonderfully honest and insightful 5 year old perspective tell me that Darren was in his heart and "I know, I know mommia, I know Darren loves me too."

Darren is exhibiting some extreme behaviors in my book. Attention seeking, escape and compliance behaviors that are at a very high level OR due to various schedule changes and demands maybe I am seeing Darren's strengths and weakness in a new light. The way that I deal with Darren in our environment is one thing, but the mixture of situations that he is being exposed to now are bringing about more issues. I get it now more than ever. Know that I am aware and working on things....please be honest and forthright about behaviors that you are seeing. Hitting, kicking, scratching, laughing, door obsessing, and extreme silliness. Lisa and I are currently brainstorming some new ideas that we hope will be able to be carried out in each environment.

Don't get me wrong, one of the things I love about both my children is that they are emotional, they care, and I know that they are trying very hard in their own unique ways. As we approach kindergarten with new awareness and new growth I feel it's important for all of those that know and love them to be a part of this. I am learning too, and truly appreciate and welcome everyone's idea's, help, and support.

A new page has turned. I see an awareness in Trevor that is fresh, and real, and good. I feel the passion in Darren's stubborn heart that keeps him fighting for attention, and love, and connection. At times I hate being the one that has to be so consistently firm with him when he is one of these "fighting" cycles. Inside I want to cry, but that would mean that I would be feeling sorry for him, and I refuse to do that. Darren is worth fighting for and with...he is smart and lovable just mixed with a little bit of pit bull:) And Trevor does not back down from this challenge either. He seems stronger and more determined with this new more holistic view of his brother...I will never in my whole life forget that night that his heart just opened. When he finally felt safe enough to ask the questions that he must have been wondering for some time now. Here I had been so worried about sitting down and talking to Trevor about Darren prior to Kindergarten.....and in that moment...it all just came to light. A miracle for sure.

Wrestle Mania

Now that we have changed their room around, they love to wrestle. It's fun to watch them. Trevor is more aggressive than Darren...until Darren gets pushed a little too far. Then he scratches or kicks. But I think it's good for them to learn each others limits!

Piece By Piece is coming along very well. We are starting our sports camps in March, possible educational camp in April, and holding our first social outing and date night in April as well. We are getting great feedback from parents and look forward to getting to know these families.

Trevor's preschool will be singing at mass this Sunday. This should be fun to watch. We have still been enjoying church...Darren most of all:) He seems to be at peace there...hard to believe maybe...but it's true. Maybe God is whispering things in his ear:)

Darren continues to do well at school these days. He seems more aware, more connected, and more verbal. It is wonderful to watch the transformation. Darren is also learning how to dress himself this week. He is stubborn, hates pulling the shirt over his head, but I bet he'll be doing it totally independent by next week.

And I am overwhelmed, excited, nervous, anxious, and proud of all of the above!

Still Football Season Around Here

Trevor, as you all know, loves football. Well, it seems as though Darren has caught the bug as well. This has just happened recently. Trevor and I used to "force" him to play at times. Which usually only consisted of a throw or a tackle or something simple. But lately, Darren really wants to play and is even initiating it! It is wonderful to see them playing together. I appreciate Trevor being a good sport. It has taken time to get Trevor to let Darren play. Football was his thing....and his little 5 year old attitude would arise:) Trevor has learned so many important lessons, at such an early age. His over sensitive soul drives me crazy sometimes....but I know that you can't teach that kind of "heart"yet time can mold it and balance it.

Our goal is provide a family centered multi-inclusive approach to therapy for special needs kids. I feel extremely fortunate to have this opportunity and working with Lisa is great. Certain aspects of the program will begin as early as March!!!

Trevor is truly turning into a Rock Star. I am amazed at his moves, his singing, and stage (coffee table) presence. I know that many of you have seen this video...but it's worth watching again!

Darren took part in this dance party!

Darren is progressing very well. He's on a roll right now. Typical. When Darren is doing well, Trevor is a little off....and vice versa. They have ALWAYS been like that. He is still enjoying swimming and ever since winter break, has been doing really well at school and in speech therapy. The boys have been doing "homework" together in the evenings. I am trying to get Darren back to some table time work again. I have been so impressed with his pre-writing skills. He really has come a long way.

Trevor and Darren continue grow at their own pace. Their personalities are shining through more and more each day. Trevor continues to be our emotional, passionate, and talented soul. He is inspiring, tiring, and sweet. Darren is really enjoying going to church on Sundays. He is just very happy there. It been wonderful hearing his voice...he loves pointing...especially at me. He usually follows it with...IloveuIloveuIloveuIloveu....I write in that way because that exactly how it sounds. He is flourishing in so many ways...

We just so enjoy watching their personalities unfold.

This is something that the Speech Therapist is starting to implement in to Darren's speech sessions. The website is very informative about the benefits of this program. Darren is responding well. It seems to be very calming for him. We will be documenting his behaviors to see if it should be any everyday part of his routine.

We are also implementing visual schedules for Darren. We have a daily calendar at home and also have a strip of pictures in the car. The idea is for him to be able to see and visualize his day...to see what happens first, next and so on. We are hoping to reduce some of his anxiety by allowing him to process and picture his day.

Check out a new play list feature that I added today. You can listen to some of my favorite songs. Trevor still sings SO WHAT all the time. It seems to be embedded in his brain. At his teacher conference I found out that he even quietly sings it at school...oops. He told me today that he wants his own ipod and cell phone. He's 5 going on 25.

Yesterday we went bowling again. But this time we played two full games. Trevor is getting really good and Darren played the whole time!!!!! We had a blast! Here's some video:

And there's lot to catch up on! OK...here are some Halloween pictures. Trevor chose to be Black Spider-man AGAIN this year. Darren was a Power Ranger who carried a plastic golf club as his weapon:) and yes, I was Sarah Palin...sorry family:) We had fun...but earlier that evening Trevor started not to feel well. It went down hill from there. Which is the reason I haven't posted anything new lately. It has been CRAZY. Between Trevor being sick and Darren going through some kind of developmental overload...it don't even know how to explain it all. I think that things have settled now (knock on wood) and am seriously happy to say that we survived.

Darren has been having a tough time lately. We have had major transitioning issues when leaving Trevor's school in the morning. His awareness seem to be up again...and now with his newly found sounds and confidence, he just feels free to express himself all over the place...good and bad! He can be an absolute giggle box ...but also a very frustrated boy at times. As hard as it is to deal with...and trust me...it's been a challenge lately...I love that he has a personality and that he has that fight and determination. I was really worried about him last week. Took him the doctor twice...thinking, "what the hell is wrong with this kid?" Answer: There was nothing physically wrong. Healthy as on ox. He's a growing boy...who everyday is discovering something new. Who maybe now wonders "Where is Trevor..where did we leave him...is he ok?" Maybe now that he is being more verbal...he realizes that yelling at me gets my attention....if I yell when she is on the phone...she'll get off and play with ME...Doesn't all of this sound familiar? This is typical toddler behavior in my book. So this is all good news. Just hard to sort it all out when it's happening.

In an effort to help Darren's anxiety I decided to bring him to Trevor's Thanksgiving Feast at school. It was great! Trevor's class put on a great show and Darren seemed to really enjoy himself. Trevor NEVER gets embarrassed by Darren. He announced that his brother was here..and went on with it. Trevor handles him, deals with him, announces him , and accepts him and because of that...so do others. Now that's something to be thankful for! (And today...Darren had no transitioning issue when dropping off Trevor) like I said...who knows???

And last...but certainly not least....Darren actually swam by himself at the pool yesterday. It was a really heart warming moment. I think I was more excited yesterday than I was watching his first steps. Why? Because I have watched this determined child WANT to swim for so long now. He saw Trevor do it this summer...and I think he has just had his mind set. The adaptive aquatics program is just phenomenal. He has really been practicing and trying....but the kid weighs almost 50 pounds and has motor planning issues...and yesterday...HE DID IT!!! He was so proud of himself...he had that little twinkle is his eye. Hooray Hooray Hooray!!

Classical Cardio

I finished my run on the treadmill today and felt great. God love Darren for staying by my side and cheering me on. He gives me that cute pointer finger approval...or yells at me if I attempt to stop and snag a drink of water..not kidding about that. So, I asked him if he wanted a turn. He seemed interested so I put his shoes on...mind you he's in his underpants...how perfect is that! So off he went. I then decided to turn on some classical music. Good choice. He smiled and seemed to really enjoy himself. He walked 3/4 of a mile!

What fun!!! We met Kirsten and Mer at the bowling alley and literally had a ball! Darren had never been bowling. I had a feeling he would like it and he did. The best thing that could have happened was Big Brown wiping out on the slick lane when he crossed "the line" when we first got there! He certainly didn't try THAT again. And guess who wanted to be first???? Trevor of course:) We played on a lane with the bumpers...but still....Trevor did awesome...103! That kid is ridiculous. Darren used the kid ramp to get the ball down the lane. He loved watching the ball roll down the lane and then would jump up and down when the pins would fall. Too cute. There is just something about bowling...SO fun. We topped in off with a great dinner at Artie's..YUM!!!

Fall Fun

The weekend certainly was as busy as we had expected it to be. The race was great! Of course the morning did not go as expected. Darren rarely sleeps past 6:30. So I never worry about setting an alarm of any sorts...ever. Darren is the human alarm in this house. So when I heard Jen and her friend Ang knocking on the door...I knew something was up. It was 7:20! Holy moly. Nothing like waking up, getting dressed and running a 5k! But that's what happened. Truro put on a great event that was a lot of fun for all.

The boys and I headed back to church on Sunday. Again, with great success. Darren is starting to get comfortable going to Truro in general. Last week when we dropped off Trevor, Darren decided that he wanted to check out Trevor's classroom, so he just walked right in and started exploring. It was interesting actually. He was definitely checking the place out! Then when we came back to pick up Trevor, which we have to go downstairs to do....downstairs is also where he has the WEE Worship on Sundays. Well, again he was looking around like, hey, I was here the other day. He even went into the chapel area and was walking around. Interesting. Darren seems happy in church. He likes the music and the acoustics. He likes when I sing in his ear:) He even let out some louder sounds when the music was loud. Even a blurted out a word that could have been an "Amen" but who's to know! haha Our wonderful helper was there and things seemed to go a little better this time.

Swimming lessons were GREAT! Darren did 10 times better this week! He had the same wonderful gentleman and he didn't fight it this time. He was laughing and really and truly almost swimming. He is very close. This man earned his stripes with Darren quickly and Darren made huge improvements because of it. I got teary watching it. He was trying so hard, and having fun, and not yelling MA-MA at the top of his lungs:) Trevor is learning a lot too. He's learning how to push off the wall and then swim, and how to float on his back, and just some good basic techniques. Great program!

My Nike Commercial

At least that's what I pretend every time I run the trial Burke Lake, which I try to do twice a week. I pump up my ipod and hit it! Tuesday's inspiring song was "Live Your Life" by T.I. featuring Rihanna. Think I listened to that song like 4 times in a row and every time the song went "Just live your life HEY ehe ehe ehe" I would raise my left arm and pump it in the air. Even let out a HEY or a HO....loudly!!! I could care less what the heck other walkers/runners think. I enjoy my time on the trail. I try to go with the flow of the trial. Glide down the slopes...push it up the inclines. Ebb and flows...ups and downs. In the moment, I am a Nike Commercial. Just do it....Just live your life. Love it.

Thursday's run was a different story. I just kept telling myself, JUST KEEP MOVING! My body felt so blah. That's how is goes sometimes. It's a these times you have to mentally challenge yourself. Thank god for music. I am so inspired by music. So much so sometimes that I run in tempo with whatever song is playing. This weekend Jen and I are running in a 5K that benefits Trevor's pre-school. Running in an event is a totally different experience as well. Should be fun!

Busy weekend ahead. Mark returns, the Run, Birthday Party, Church-Round 2, Swim Lessons, and hopefully some good football!

Just Live Your Life!

CHURCH

I called my dad last week and when he picked up the phone I asked him, " Did you feel the heaven's shake?"

Dad: No, why?

ME: Because Trevor and I went to church!!!!

Needless to say, it had been awhile. Truro is such a wonderful community....I know that Trevor has always been comfortable there and I have always enjoyed mass when I've been. I like it there because the service is upbeat. Lots of singing. People seem happy. I just didn't know if I could really feel part of a spiritual community. I don't know where I am with this at this stage of life. But when looking through the bulletin, I noticed a program. Recreation and Respite for special needs children and their siblings....Sat, Oct. 11 from 6-9pm. HUH???? I read it again. Yes, I read it correctly. WOW...I'm impressed! I couldn't have been better timing. Mark is on a golf trip and getting a break on a Saturday, just doesn't happen. So I signed them up.

So they went last night! They had sent me an agenda and form to fill out. When it asked what to do when behaviors should arise..I laughed and thought...I don't have enough pages to explain the various tactics. So I kept it simple. I found that these volunteers/buddies were phenomenal. As I walked in to pick them up, I instantly was surrounded by people telling me how wonderful they did. What a good sweet boy Trevor was. I listened and thanked everyone for their kindness...but didn't see Darren. I look on the little stage and I see a boy...probably around 8 years old...playing with Darren. Taking time to PLAY with Darren. I froze. Darren was laughing...didn't even know I was there. One of the volunteers then came up to me and just started telling me everything about the night...some transition problems for Darren...boo-boo for Trevor...but all were wonderful...accepting...and so very kind.

As we gather to leave. I see someone approaching me. Another wonderful volunteer who at first could have been speaking in tongues because I was just so overwhelmed with gratitude and shock! She went on to ask if I ever bring them to church, and if so she would be willing to help out and be Darren's buddy. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE! Is what I am thinking....she wants me to bring Darren to church???? Is the congregation ready??? hahaha SO, I said yes. If you are willing to help me, I will be here tomorrow at 8:30.

And we did, and there she was. As soon as she spotted us she came over to sit with us. WHAT? Darren was doing so well. We just had to make it through the first reading and then they are taken downstairs to WEE WORSHIP....how cute is that???? Darren liked the music...was jumping around, but quiet. Of course, there was an older gentleman that turned to him and said, "now go and sit down" ..........Typical:)! So, my new helper signaled to me and said kindly, "let's head down there a little early to give Darren time to get adjusted." WOW

(I am sorry to get into so much detail, but it is helping me process what just happened today. Its was just awesome)

The little chapel was set up for these little tykes...and the volunteers were ready and willing and KIND...so kind. I stay for a minute and then go....trusting that my new helper can handle it....and wants to handle it. I swallow hard and return to church. Where the priest delivers a wonderful homily about how easy it is to judge and complain...but how important it is...to do as Noah did...and build an Arc. Be a leader. Do what you are called to do. Make a difference...don't judge others....make others lives better...easier...help them. GULP...

Time now to go get them. As I walk down the stairs I pray...please let there be silence. Again, I walk in to a supportive room. Where my helper says....all in all I give him an A+! Wait, what??? They liked him....they spoke so kindly of him. I know from Trevor that he struggled a bit during chapel time....but they accepted him. I felt like I couldn't breathe. Trevor was happy and had done a reading at chapel time. Couldn't breathe. THEN my helper says...OK let's go back to church!

And so we did. They did great. Darren sat on my lap and was happy. Trevor was a good boy as always. I even went to communion...and the boys came with me...and the woman asked if she could bless the boys. GULP....I felt accepted....WE were accepted, as is. It was overwhelmingly wonderful. This new person made a real difference in my life today. For that, I am thankful. Don't know what lies ahead...but today was GREAT!

Trevor is really doing well with his writing these days. They have been working a lot at school and he has been doing his "homework" everyday. As with everything regarding Trevor, now that he is interested, he is learning fast. And when you make a big deal about it...he does even better!!! Ham!!!

Now if you can just imagine Darren's pointer finger STRONGLY pointing towards the windows/door...knowing that we have to go outside and in the car to get there. Smart child. On Sundays the boys have started taking an Adaptive Aquatics swim class. IT IS AWESOME. It is for special needs children, but since they were low in numbers, they accepted Trevor as well. They have wonderful volunteers that worked with the kids as I just waded in the pool and occasionally signaled for Darren to cut it out and be quiet. A really nice high school boy worked with Trevor. Trevor can swim...but this class takes place in the 4 ft area...no standing. So he is really learning he fundamentals of swimming. God bless the gentleman (and I mean gentle) that worked with Darren. Darren loves the water...but didn't like the idea of being separated from Mommy too much and let's just say he let everyone know! He wasn't crying...he was just being Darren. I tell ya, there was a time I never thought I'd hear ma-ma...goodness:) He was yellin it from the mountain tops that day. He'd kick a couple times...it was like SEE..I did it now give me MA-MA , MA-MA. This patient man was not bothered. He picked up on Darren quickly and would start to bob him up and down to make him laugh..and then go again. The funniest part was when they were playing red light green light. The instructor would hold up the color and the kids would have to swim. Well, it was a green light and she said to Darren, " now come on Darren, let's see some more arms" with that he had began flaring his arms from side to side. I looked at the instructor and said, " Well, you got your arms," She replied," Yes, I DID" It was hilarious.

On Wednesdays we have been going to Oak Marr just to swim and play. That has been working out really well. Trevor likes to dive and rescue Spiderman in the water....while Darren likes to initiate "Shark" by saying...ba ba ba bum....(JAWs) his version is just ba ba. Then I chase him and kiss him of course once captured. That's the latest.

With the good, comes difficult times. I find myself watching a shift in relationship between the boys. As they approach 5, I find good hearted Trevor longing for normal relationships with friends. I also see Darren trying so hard to connect....just a little late. It's hard as a mom to watch this honestly. I know that Trevor needs these relationships, but I also know how much Darren learns and enjoys his brother....yet Trevor needs another life outside of this...trust me...THIS I know. Maybe I am selfishly sad because I miss my partner. I have relied on my typically developmentally child too much maybe. I need to take the wheel for awhile and remember that Darren is MY responsibility....not Trevor's. I never want Trevor to feel that Darren is a burden. As we approach the school age years, I worry. I said to Mark this weekend that we need to sit down with Trevor soon and really explain Darren to him. So that when he gets to school....he knows. That is going to be hard. It makes me teary just thinking about it.

I am struggling tonight because I feel like Darren is on the verge of a major breakthrough and I feel that I am the only one who gets the privilege of seeing it on a daily basis. I bet that many other parents must share this perspective on some level.

It's hard sometimes...life is what it is. Trevor grows.....and so does Darren...just on different time schedules. Yet I have no control.....I need to just watch, trust, and learn. I'm trying...........

Chores

We have started something new around here...CHORES. Basically, simple responsibilities for which they earn stickers...which eventually leads to toys. BUT at least they are working for them!! It makes me feel better about buying them something, that's for sure. Trevor's responsibilities include:

Sleeping in his own bed-which became an issue with Mark being gone during the week and us being "team"
Homework-working on his writing and coloring
Cleaning up-toys/games/etc
Getting dressed in the morning and brushing teeth and hair

He's doing great with it...he has always loved getting stickers:)

Now, when I try to brush Darren's teeth, he's not so happy about it. He did it by himself with no problem today...with Trevor's guidance. Is Trevor proud or what????

OH!!! Another new thing is that Trevor is vey interested in learning how to read. So, since he is still into Super Hero's, we have been working on two books. He has basically memorized the books and certainly can point out important words like Spider-man, the Vulture, Batman...etc. Most importantly is that he is interested in trying.

Back Into the Swing of Things

Well it certainly is back to school time and so far, the boys seem to be adjusting well. Many of you know that I had hoped to place the boys is different schools this year in an effort to make our lives a little simpler...but unfortunately those plans did not come to be. But we are making the best out the situation. Trevor LOVES being back at school (Truro). This year he is in the "Transitions" class (which is a little more academically based) and attends everyday from 9:00-1:00. Some of his old friends from last year as in his class, but some old girlfriends are not in his class (Karis and Kathy) which was a bit disappointing for him at first. But was told from Karis's mom the other day that Trevor told Karis on the playground,"I still love you". So it seems that all is well. He seems to really enjoy going to chapel at school, which they do once a week. He was not only quoting bible scriptures in a tone that only Linus would appreciate, but he also said, "How come I am such a good boy at Chapel?.......is it because I am so perfect?" That is a direct quote. He is hilarious. Trevor continues to enjoy playing with his friends. The boys a couple doors down seem to be part of our family...and Trevor a part of theirs. They truly enjoy playing with each other.

Darren is 10 feet tall these days:) He is still in the PAC (Pre-school Autism Class) but this year he is at a different Elementary School. With all the transitions he has had with teachers/bus drivers/etc....we decided it was best to not put him on the bus this year. He was averaging 45 to 60 minutes each way and it just didn't seem fair. Driving and picking up at least provides one constant in his day and let me tell you....he loves it. I think he feels more relaxed with me dropping him off, and is darn happy to see me when I come and pick him up. Seeing that smile is worth it.

He is also really enjoying playing outside with the guys. He has taught himself how to ride a two wheeled scooter....and even wears a helmet!! Just yesterday he dared to put both feet on the scooter at the same time and glide along like the rest....it's amazing to me...because he has learned all of this by watching the kids to do it...not by being told what to do.

Looks like I am going to have to stop working at PVI. With all the driving and picking up at various times...it's just been harder to put in any significant hours. It's disappointing in a way...but a relief in an other. This year is just going to be a little hectic with schedules and so forth. Gotta do what you gotta do:) and Mark is still working in DE during the week. But we are making it work :)

The Young Athletes Camps are really coming along well. This week was certainly the best yet. I thing that the kids are getting used to the routine and the parents as well. I would like to give a big round of applause to the parents and volunteers. This isn't easy. It's not like sending Trevor to Tae Kwon Do camp for 3 hours, where I drop him and and come back and get him. The parents work their tails off in an effort to get these little athletes to succeed....even if it's one kick, or one rotation without a tantrum. I am soaking wet with sweat after circle time!!!! This week Darren for the first time actually participate in circle on his own. I was shocked. Now he didn't make it the whole time. But he happily did some of it. Then it becomes a game of run away. My strategy is to stay as upbeat as possible and I try not to let him get out of doing what I know he can do. When he starts to drop and kick in an effort to escape...I take him outside and I tell him to calm down because we are going to go back in and do this together. If when we walk back in, he starts to fuss again, I turn him around and try again. My hope is that if he comes back in the gym happy, he will participate. Keep in mind that this is only the first 20 minutes, there is still 6 rotations, parachute, and kickball/and or obstacle course to go!!!! Like I said, it's hard work. I am not the only parent chasing their child down...I am not the only one encouraging them...even when there are fussing out of pure over-stimulation. Structured chaos. I mean that in a very good way. The volunteers have been wonderful with cheering on the athletes and siblings, and parents:)

The most amazing part happened during the second part of the camp. We decided to try a game of kickball. What's amazing is that we actually were able to accomplish just that!!!! I watched each kid kick the ball and run to first. The first time around, they were a bit confused...that's when the parents and volunteers really jumped in. We had a volunteer at each base greeting these proud campers. The second, and third time around...they were AWESOME. I saw these kids running on their own to first...no parents....wow....it worked!!! Then on to second then third then home...hooray!!! And most of them just kept WANTING to go again. It was a great moment. Darren was exhausted by this point. I had worked him hard at each station this time. Lisa did make him kick it once and helped him run the bases....then he was done. He just sat there....yes....sat there and watched. Ha! Trevor, did great as well. He works hard at each station and does what he is supposed to do. Such a good boy.

All in all....it really was great.

The Olympics

There is just something so inspiring about watching the Olympics. This year even Bob Costas isn't annoying me. I was watching a swimming event while running on the tread mill yesterday and I'm the dork who runs faster....like that's going to help the swimmer win the race!!! hahaha. I love watching people compete. I love watching their demeanor. I knew Michael Phelps wasn't happy about something when he finished the butterfly yesterday...didn't know why. Turns out his goggles were leaking during the race. I watched the gymnast that really hurt the USA's chance at gold, falter twice...I think she was just trying to hard. SEE I really watch the Olympics. Like I said, I'm a sports kinda girl. I also find all the different sports fascinating. I get teary when athletes acheive their dreams...and teary when the fall short. Such is life. Life is about hard work...dreams can be acheived...yet you can't win 'em all.

Darren's new favorite word is POOL which accompanied by the cutest pointer finger ever as he points to the Olympic pool on TV. I love that pointer finger. He has just started pointing at things in the last 2 months or so. That finger makes me smile, cause he uses it with such determination and will. His vocalizations are really coming along well. His little voice when he comes in our bedroom to get me, a whispered, "ma-ma" just about melts my heart.

Trevor is my social butterfly. He loves having his friends over the house these days and he hates when the leave. Such strong connections to others. I think he is enjoying the Young Athletes Camps...although he's not quite sure if the camps are for him or for Darren. He originally called it Darren's camp...maybe because he had already been to soccer and tae kwon do camp. But I think that he is getting the picture that its really for both of them. People ask me, " What do you think Trevor thinks about Darren?" At this point, I think that Trevor just thinks of Darren as his brother. "He doesn't talk yet, but he's trying, we're teaching him...right ma-ma (no mommia these days by the way) Or "he's trying hard to talk today" then he'll tell to Darren repeat him...Darren continually repeats Trevor faster than anyone...even me. He clearly hears Trevor's voice above the rest. And as they held hands today while walking to the car, I felt thankful once again that they have each other. They are my little olympians!

It really has been a busy summer for us!

The week after soccer camp we headed to Bethany for the weekend where Trevor caught some terrible stomach flu bug. Which of course was then passed on to Darren, skipped me, and eventually got Mark a week later. NOT FUN. When all had recovered it was time to get back to enjoying our summer. Trevor has been attending Tae Kwon Do camp. This week will his third week of camp. Last Friday, he tested and received his first belt. He is officially a white belt master:) He seems to really be enjoying it, mind you that now he karate chops everything and everyone! Great job Master T!

We all survived our first week of Young Athletes Sports Camp this past Saturday. The turnout was amazing....38 kids! When we first planned all of this, I think we had agreed that we should take no more than 20. The response was so great that we hated to turn anyone down. All and all, Lisa and I were thrilled at how it went. We started off in a big group and did some circle time activities, song, dancing, stretching...etc. Then we broke them all into stations. Bowling, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Track, and the favorite of the day...the Obstacle Course. When observing all of this as a whole, it seems crazy honestly....and initially I got nervous. But then I started walking and checking on each group, where I was pleased to see that all was going well. Lisa had been doing the same and came to the same conclusion. PHEW! Everyone has asked, "How did Darren do?" I can honestly say that he tried and participated in every station. BUT, he did not stay in one designated area for long. He was so excited, and overwhelmed, and happy...and everything else in between. He was a live wire. Truth is, my main concern was the camp as a total this time around. I wanted to make sure that things were flowing properly and just observing it all. Trevor did great and enjoyed himself very much. Darren had a great time as well.

To me, it was a safe haven. It was great to be around other parents going through the same type issues as we are. I never felt judged....I felt like we were all in the same boat and that there was a understanding that whatever happened was OK. Trust me, I know that I don't always feel that way in public, although I have learned not to care so much about that kind of stuff. But it was nice not to worry about it at all. I watched parents clap at their child's success, and struggle with a transition or two. That's life for all of us. Doesn't make it easier really, but it did make me feel better. The kids were fascinating. As I scanned the gym, I couldn't help but smile, while sweating and trying to keep Darren in one place...there is such a need for this type of program...for the kids, for the parents, the siblings...the community. I just was so happy to be a part of it and afterwards I was SO tired....mentally and physically...but content. Next weekend will be even better:)

My Competitive Soul...Part II

I have got to admit. I am not a big soccer fan. But I also have to admit that when I watch Trevor out on that field...he fits the bill. He's quick, unlike me, and does a great job handling the soccer ball. He looks comfortable out there. This is just a little soccer camp that only last a week. How much could he learn, right??? A lot actually. Not all about soccer though. Sure he learned how to stop the ball with his foot, and knee, and chest. But he learned that there are other kids that want that ball just as much as he does and want to score just as much as he does. And the competition begins!!!! Today I watched these 4 and 5 year old children battle through the typical youth soccer ball huddle trying to get one kick...one score...one high five from a newly made friend...many of which have no idea what the others' name is:) Trevor's strategy was different. He wasn't afraid to enter the huddle of madness...but he choose to observe the madness...when he saw that the ball was going to be knocked free...he attacked. If he judged correctly, he would get the ball and head to the goal to score. If unsuccessful, he would run back to guard the goal. "Wow" I thought, " nobody taught him that". His wounded pride caused a couple of tears when his legs got tripped up with another soccer hungry tyke. I think he enjoyed the coach lowering himself to one knee to check on him. He would then pop up and carry on.

But on this particular day. Trevor did not score a goal. That's not good. As the end of camp became reality....he lingered a bit on the field. As soon as I motioned to him that it was time to find his ball because camp was over...it was time to go, in that instant, the frown appeared. He ran sadly to his ball and by the time he got to me he was crying. As I picked him up and hugged my little competitor, I smiled. I knew he was crying because he hadn't scored. When I asked him that question...he didn't answer...the cry just became more exaggerated. I put his limp disappointed body in the car and decided to try to discuss the issue further. Not as easy as I thought. Trevor is stubborn, like me, and didn't want to hear the good things that I was pointing out. So I said, "Fine then, take your shoes off and we will just toss them in the trash...do you want to quit?" With that there was a moment of silence....then, "No Mommia, I don't want to quit. " Phew!!! I could have set myself up with that question. But I knew it would get his attention...and it did. "

I just love hearing his little voice!!!! He is trying so hard to copy Trevor with just about everything. He even picked up the PlayStation 2 remote control yesterday and pushed every button in an effort to play along with Trevor. Like I have said a million times, I am so thankful that they have each other. Our summer has been great thus far. Next week Trevor starts soccer camp and Darren heads back to school. Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone!!

Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

Vacation had to get away...The Go-Go's certainly knew what they were talking about! We just got back from visiting my parents in NC. Every year gets better and better. I remember the first time I attempted this. Craziness. I remember thinking, "Did I really think I was going to be able to relax?" I think they were 2 1/2 at the time. NOW it's fun. The boys are great in the car and just really have a fun time when we get there. When we were there for Spring Break, Darren was potty training. THAT is still hard for me to believe. Amazing.

This trip Trevor taught himself how to swim.

It is fascinating to me to watch Trevor when he is learning a new skill. I am continually shocked at how quickly he learns things. The other neat thing about this is that Darren was trying to imitate Trevor.

All I can simply say is...we had a lot of fun.

The Sun is Setting on..........

Trevor's first venture to the beach without Darren and me. It's strange for all of us, but nice for all of us. I am enjoying my time with Darren...and I am sure that Trevor is being well taken care of by all. It's a big deal in some ways, but so important for us all. It makes me realize how much work Darren is alone and how much attention Trevor deserves. There are always times that I worry that I am not giving both of them what they need. Typical I'm sure. It's just that Trevor helps me so much, but he also drains me mentally...as any good four year should. The lesson here is.....everyone needs a break sometimes. Just a little change of pace can do a lot of good. There is a wonderful part of the normal routine that is consistent and great....but change can be good and refreshing. I am happy for Trevor, that he surrounded with people that love him. I am happy for Darren too...he can get lots of Mommy time that he really needs right now. On this beautiful evening....I am just happy

With the help, support, and backing of Special Olympics, along with POAC (Parents of Autistic Children), and the Down Syndrome Association we will running a five week program this summer!!!!!!!!!! Every Saturday in August from 9-12. This is SO incredibly exciting. The link above gives you an idea about the program. Lisa and I will be adding to it a bit by incorporating these basic skills into sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, bowling, tag, and putt-putt. This will not only be a great opportunity for Darren and Trevor, but for other families as well. Lots to do to prepare. If anyone is interested in volunteering, please let me know. We are going to need lots of hands to help these little guys and girls:)

Ok....here we go!!! Let's see.....where do I begin???? Met with Special Olympics this week to discuss plans for sports camps geared toward the ages of 3-7. The email I got back was so positive. "A pilot program is already in place...equipment and resources in place...let's meet this week"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So we did. And it was probably one of the easiest meetings that I have ever been a part of. When universes collied...it's scary! We were all on the same page. Believe in it, want to make it work, and want to do it together. Done deal... We are trying to incorporate POAC (Parents of Autistic Children) and the Down Syndrome Association. This could be a really big deal. It is very exciting...personally and for the opportunities it could provide for Darren and Trevor. Exciting is not quite the word. We are trying to get all parties together for a meeting to confirm. But things look VERY promising....possibly something happening in AUGUST. Keep your fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!

It seems that there is a lot of random updates, so here we go!

Darren is totally potty trained (OK..he wears a pull up at night) I still find this totally amazing. He rarely has an accident, and if he does it's minor. GREAT JOB BIG D!!!! He is also trying very hard to talk. The approximations that come out his mouth these days are startling!!!
Just got the licensing agreement from Autism Speaks in regards to the cards. I have to sign it, send it back to them, and they will send the official logo that can be placed next to the cards saying that a proceed will be given to Autism Speaks!! Very proud and excited about that.
Now that the weather is nice, we are able to play outside much more. Which means sports frenzy for Trevor. It also means a lot more time outside with his friends, which he truly enjoys. We are currently into street hockey, basketball, and baseball...gotta love it!
Still trying to figure out a way to start some summer sports camps. Just can't seem to find a location yet. Attacking this a little last minute for this summer, but I am still working on it. I really think that this concept is a great one.
Mark is still traveling back and forth to DE for work. We are managing fine...it's just hard on all of us...but somehow we make it work:)

Lastly, I just feel tired lately. I don't know if it is because I just have so much on my mind, or WHAT. Sometimes I feel like I get ALL of these ideas and questions and theories....and so on and so on and so on. I overwhelm myself. I somehow convince myself that everything can happen INSTANTLY. Not so. But that doesn't stop me from trying. It just teaches me to be more realistic. Whatever is ahead needs to be planned out appropriately and executed perfectly. I am just not that patient when it comes to ideas that I KNOW will work. Maybe I am half the reason why we have moved a million times:) I like to believe in things, I am not afraid of change...I am probably more afraid of NOT trying something. I like a plan....ALL about a plan. Maybe my plan needs some adjustment....maybe that will help. I just think that for the first time I feel a purpose forming for my life....and I don't know how to make it all happen. That frustration of not being able to make it happen NOW is what makes me tired.

I am VERY proud of this new adventure and would like to tell you all about it. This was a simple project that turned into something that I wasn't quite expecting. Again, just trying to roll with it. A couple of weeks again I brought out the Diego neon finger paints and was determined to have both boys sit down on the kitchen floor and do some good old, messy finger painting. Trevor was game as always. Darren wasn't quite interested at first, that's putting it kindly, but once he was MADE to do it...he tolerated it. He likes squeezing the paint out....dipping his fingertip in it....but would them want it off. It took him some time to be willing to let me put his entire hand in it and smear it around. Eventually we completed two very large pieces of paper. They were very colorful and happy...especially knowing the effort it took for the project to be completed!

Couple of days later we ripped up the artwork...on purpose, mind you. My mom is an artist who does this kind of stuff. Every time we are visiting, she takes the artwork created by the boys and turns into neat cards. Feeling somewhat inspired, I thought, "maybe we can do that too!" So they ripped up the art work the way "true artists would" and I told them to just glue the pieces on the cards. When I stood them on the counter to dry...I just kept looking at them. They were really cute! But they needed a little something. A long time ago I had purchase these little stickers at Michael's that had inspiring words and phrases on them.... Believe, Dare to Dream, Make a Wish...etc. PERFECT!!! And as l looked at each card individually, I picked the appropriate title. I fell in love with all of them. On the back of the cards I have added a picture of the boys and this little write up:
This card was created by our "Wonder Twins". Darren is autistic, Trevor is not. Yet, together they live with, battle, and break down the walls of Autism with good ole' brotherly love.

We're Playing Bas-ket-ball

Does anyone actually know that song???

Well we have been playing basketball. Darren is definitely a post player and Trevor is a natural gunner. In my last post I was talking about sports camps for kids. So I figured I'd better put myself to the test. Can I teach Darren how to play basketball or any sport? So off to Toys R Us we went. We got a new basketball hoop, plastic hockey sticks, fresh new bouncy balls, and all other necessary equipment. The first day of basketball we were outside. The goal was for Darren to just get the ball and slam dunk it without whining. That took awhile. But it eventually did happen. So then he had to get the ball, dunk it, high five Trevor, and sit down.....with as little whining as possible. Again, it took some time. BUT he can do it. He's also a perfectionist. He has to make the shot...if he misses...he, on his own, will get the ball and try again. I liked that.

Trevor used to shoot baskets all the time as a toddler. Seriously, the kid was so good. Watch the video and see for yourselves!!! It had been awhile since we had really played, so his form was rusty. What I love about Trevor is that he really does listen to what I say...even if he's mad...or determined that he is right...he listens and eventually WILL try.

Round 2: Last night we tried again. My initial goal was to have Darren catch the ball, turn, and dunk. If he did so, he would then receive his beloved frog as a reward. I would say catch and he attempted to say CATCH. Cool. I was even more surprised when he caught it! I then told him to shoot, he did and then went to where is frog was and say, "FR-OGG". For those that have heard him say frog...it's too darn cute!!! Wow, this is working. Next he had to catch it, shoot it, get the ball, and pass it to Trevor. Mission accomplished. "FR-OGGG".

Thank god for Trevor. He is my biggest helper and support. I can't explain to you all how much this four year old helps me on a day to day basis. What a team.

I am going to keep this one brief. Darren's imitation skills are really sky rocketing! When we are with friends now...not only does he hang around them...he is starting to participate in what everyone is playing. Great improvement. We are blessed with friends that are accepting and patient. More video to come...we are working on learning hockey, basketball, and riding a big wheel. Stay tuned!
